The other day John pulled out some jeans and a pink shirt for Alexandra to wear. Allie immediately frowned at his selection and exclaimed, "No Dad, that doesn't match!" She quickly found the matching pair of pink sweat pants and shook her head at him, "Silly Daddy", she said. John looked at her in disbelief that a not-yet-three-year-old had better fashion sense than he had. He may have even glanced over his own outfit to make sure it was adequate before leaving for work that day.
But poor John's inferiority complex didn't stop there. His new experience with premature female intellectual development continued when he heard the baby crying one time (of many), and asked the other kids, "Why is she crying? Did you take something from her?" Allie just sighed. "No, Dad. She just needs her binky." With one hand on her hip she found and placed a pacifier into her sister's mouth and the baby quieted immediately. Allie shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly. "See?"
John just walked away and said to me in a sulky voice, "She's a better parent than I am." He and I both know that isn't true. But- with her recently demonstrated precocious insight on the ways of the world, we are both hoping that Allie will be cleaning the bathroom, paying the bills, and helping the boys with their homework by the end of the year!
